Resumption of conservation work in the "Fuentes Carrionas and Fuente Cobre-Montaña Palencia" Special Area of Conservation (SAC)
03-07-2020
The actions of improvement and conservation of tiles of the Special Area of Conservation (SAC) "Fuentes Carrionas and Fuente Cobre-Montaña Palentina", in the province of Palencia, have been resumed after the temporary suspension due to the state of sanitary alarm by Covid-19. In the last days of June these actions will be finished, completing those already carried out with the installation of fences around "blows" or small groups of natural regeneration of yew trees to protect them from the pressure of wild herbivores.
The work carried out between the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020 has been clearly selective and has ringed five of the beech stands previously described in the LIFE BACCATA Preparatory Action, consisting of the identification and diagnosis of the yew habitat. These stands are located in the municipality of Cervera de Pisuerga.
The aim of the selective clearings on beech and of those ringed is to achieve a reduction in the tree density of the upper stratum (beechwood) and an opening of holes in this canopy. These are very important for the viability of yew regeneration, by increasing the amount of light that reaches the sub-floor, while at the same time encouraging greater development of adult trees by limiting existing competition.
